What is a Meme And What It Means For Your Blog

Recently I had a coffee with a friend and before we even took our first sip of java she said, “I need to ask you a question. What is a Meme?” My answer to her was, “You know what it is, but you just didn’t know it had a name.”

Wikipedia shares, “A meme is “an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture. An Internet meme may take the form of an image, hyperlink, video, picture, website, or hashtag. These small movements tend to spread from person to person via social networks, blogs, direct email, or news sources.

So how do you use them in your own blog?

When writing a blog or composing content, think about creating small, snackable content that is easy to digest.

I read about this concept in the article, “The Why And How of Creating ‘Snackable’ Content.” The purpose is to create something that you can break apart from the whole; to tweet, post or tease the composition you have created.

By doing this you already are half way there with the Meme. Take your snippet and add an image, or hashtag to make it more intriguing and viral. Canva is a free, easy to use resource that allows you to create custom, quality images.

Here is an example of a Memetic Post I created not to long ago. Due to the snackable content, I was able to create a few Memes that further extended the life of my blog.

Take that Meme and use it in your post, or presentation, share it to Facebook and Google+, Tweet and then Pin it, and remember always link back to the source.
