What do you do when your favorite product has been discontinued?
I'm a pretty fickle consumer in general, but I do have a couple of beauty staples. These are things I've been using---solidly and without fail---for the last two years or more. These are things I buy again as soon as I finish them, and which I would purchase in bulk at Costco if I could.
One of these things is Cover Girl's Advanced Radiance Age-Defying Compact Foundation. I use a few dabs here and there to even out my skin tone, and it works like a dream: it's like airbrushing! I love it! If only I'd known, however, that the last batch I bought would be my last. Because Cover Girl's Advanced Radiance Age-Defying Compact Foundation has been discontinued. Forever. Without explanation.
I first started worrying when I couldn't find it at Target. Ah well, I thought, maybe they're just out. But then I couldn't find it at Walgreens either. Or Rite-Aid. Or Long's Drugs. And then I looked it up on the Cover Girl website and discovered the terrible news. Sure, they give you the old "if you used to use ____, you'll love _____" spiel, but somehow I just don't think it's going to be the same. I mean, I could try it, I guess, but I know I'll feel disloyal.
A few years back, I found a perfume I used to love in a Gap outlet. It was Gap Om (anyone remember it?) and it came in an orange bottle. It was my scent of choice for the latter half of the 90s, and when it got discontinued shortly after I graduated high school, I mourned for months. Finding it again in that Gap outlet was like finding a crate in the attic full of old love letters, old flannel shirts, old Pearl Jam albums. I snapped up three bottles immediately. I've since finished them of course, but I still look for Gap Om whenever I find myself in an outlet mall. There's something about getting your hands back on a discontinued product that makes you feel like....well, like you've won.
Anyone else found themselves in the same situation? Have you continued to look for your favorite discontinued product (eBay, perhaps? Or is that too weird?) or have you simply given up the ghost and moved on?
And hey, if you happen to find the Advanced Radiance Age-Defying Foundation in your local drugstore before it's done with altogether, snap me up a few compacts in "Creamy Natural," would you? I'll pay you back.
