Support Hunger Action Month
September is Hunger Action Month! Feeding America takes this month to urge people to donate non-perishable food. There are many national programs that depend on donations from Food Drives. These organizations are preparing for the large crowds of people that will be requesting their services during the Winter Months and Holiday Season. I have listed some of the Non-profit Agencies and links to their websites below.
- Feeding America helps over 37 Million US citizens a year through Food Pantries, Soup Kitchens, and shelters. Their Facebook page has an interactive map that can locate a donation center near you.
- Second Harvest Food Bank- Finding a national website for this famous food bank was not possible. Each search turned up different web addresses for various locations across the nation. The hyperlink above directs you to the Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. I am proud to say I know a troop of Boy Scouts that work hard to help supply this organization year round!
- Meals On Wheels program distributes one meal a day to the disabled and elderly. Sadly this is the only hot meal some of these people receive each day.
- National Pet Food Bank- Don’t forget to donate to help the pets too. This national organization distributes pet food to animal shelters and rescue organizations.
My children and I support a local soup kitchen called The Daily Bread Community Kitchen. This organization provides lunch and dinner to over 300 people in our community each day. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but we live in a Small Community. This figure doesn’t include the Meals on Wheels participations or the peanut butter sandwiches that are handed out to the people in line after the food is gone. Each month, my daughters choose several economy size items to donate. My children also do various activities to earn money which they donate as well. Every visit the administrator tells me he is happy to see such young faces giving back to the community.
