Should I Feel Bad Because I Have a Housekeeper?! My MIL Thinks So!

Dear Mouthy Housewives,

I have a housekeeper come clean my house two times a month. It's a luxury, I know, but I'd rather spend $100 to get my house cleaned than get a massage or a new outfit. It seems like no big deal to me, but my mother-in-law is constantly making snide remarks that a SAHM shouldn't have to pay someone to clean her house. It's really annoying and I try to not let it bother me, but ultimately it does. Any advice on a good comeback?

Signed,

Dear Why Do You Care How I Spend My Money,

Your MIL definitely needs to step back because there is nothing wrong with hiring a housekeeper a couple times a month. Or a couple times a week if you have the financial resources and that's how you choose to spend your money. Or even a couple times a day -- okay, that would be overboard.

I have yet to meet a SAHM who is resting on her laurels, watching television while getting a lavender food rub from her cabana boy. Every "SAHM" I know is walking kids to the bus stop, volunteering at school, driving kids around town, wiping noses, helping with homework, reading their children's books, doing laundry and on and on. It doesn't stop.

And we can't do everything. Sure, my roof gutters need to be cleaned out but you don't see me climbing up some eight foot ladder with a broom in my hands. No. I call in a professional because I'm not insane.

You are simply calling in someone to help you with house cleaning a couple times a month. The rest of the time it's probably you doing all the work. I mean, how many times have you loaded and unloaded the dishwasher this week alone?

I'm guessing your MIL is just secretly jealous because she'd love a cleaning person of her own. I don't really think you need a good comeback. You just need to address the snide remarks. Something along the lines of, "It seems like it bothers you that we have a housekeeper. But I'm not sure why. Because I work really hard to take care of these kids and keep this house running. I just need a little bit of help so dust balls the size of boulders don't roll over us while we sleep." See if that works.

Good luck and enjoy your clean home with no guilt!

Kelcey, TMH
