Role Models: Change is happening. But, is it for the better?
Lately, we've been hearing so much about body image and self-esteem. We've heard a lot about role models and the right people for youngpeople to look up to. We've been reading, hearing and watching, of course, a certain infamous MTV VMA performance. The world is incredibly consumed with this situation, that many other things are somewhat slipping through the cracks. Well, I must say, this whole MTV thing has got me to thinking. What does the world consider to be beautiful? What do we think is the personification of beauty?
Parents all over the country are terrified that their daughters that have watched Hannah Montana, will follow and repeat the actions of their favorite teen sensation. Mothers are scared that their daughters will look at this and think that if they want attention, that they should resort to virtually being undressed and practically molesting a Man. Especially on stage.
Mothers are also concerned that their sons will find a girl like this attractive and bring her home to meet his family. Is this the image that has become the new "it" trend? Twerking? What in the world is that? You know, I'm 25 and there are so many things about the new modern world that I don't know. And this twerking thing. I heard so much about it and I must say, I am now disgusted as to what it means. I mean, like we need another term or action that describes sexual behavior. I mean, really.
This young lady, we've seen and heard singing, "The best of both worlds" to the top of her lungs, excited about showing the world her acting talent. Proud that she was actually able to act with her Dad, playing her Dad. Having a big brother named Jackson, best friends and battling between two totally different universes. I've seen the show and I must say that I honestly thought about it. What if I was a celebrity and I was trying to figure out how to balance both lives?
I looked at her, perfoming. And I was wondering, when she got started, "Where is she going with this?" The outfit, the teddy bears, the foam finger, the "tongue" thing. I mean, What?! Just crazy. My thought aside from instant outrage, was 'What is his wife thinking?' She was sitting right there and watching it. I can't imagine what was going through her mind.
I know that a lot of people say that she is just seeking attention. But, I don't know if she's seeking attention or if she completely well aware of what she is doing. I know that a lot of Disney stars try their best to shake that image of them being a kid. But, there is a way to go about it. And she's chosen the absolute wrong way to do it. I strongly believe that there are some things that need to change here and I think that we need to pray for her. We really need to pray for her. She has a lot of talent and I personally think that there is time to turn things around.
Role Models are important and they are needed. But, we've got to monitor whom we admire and why. We can't reallt take things or people at face value. We've got to be wise and teach all of our fellow young people to be wiser and smarter. To learn the importance of figuring out the difference between admiring and worshipping. To learn the importance how to respect yourself and that we don't have to do everything that we see and hear. Having the common sense to be our own people.
Follow the Leader. Simon says. Games like this, describes so much of life today. People always want to follow everyone else and don't want to blaze their own paths. Well, I feel that it's important and great to look up to people, but, don't try to be them. The best way to be a role model, is to be true to yourself. No diamond will sine brighter than a beautiful soul and heart.
