Do you love scones? Do you love chocolate? Well my Nutella Scrolls are exactly that IN ONE! Chocolately goodness!!
With school holidays here, I’m always looking for new things to bake with Miss 7. She loves to bake, even though her idea of baking is watching me do most of the work while she licks the spoons. These are a big hit in our house and are amazing when warmed up, coffee in hand and snuggling watching a good movie with the ratbags.
So here is my recipe. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
2 cups self-raising flour
90g butter, cubed
2/3 cup milk
pinch of salt
1/2 cup Nutella (or any brand of chocolate hazelnut spread)
Preheat oven to 200 °C and line a tray with baking paper.
Place butter into a large mixing bowl. Sift flour into the bowl and add salt. Using your fingertip, rub the butter and flour together until it looks like really fine breadcrumbs. Using a round bladed knife or a butter knife if you don’t have one, mix in a cutting motion until the mixture in incorporated and holding together.
Lightly flour your bench and gently kneed the dough on the bench for about 5 mintues until it is smooth. If the dough appears stickly, sprinkle with more flour. Roll the dough into a large rectangle (about 40cm x 20cm or 1cm thick)
Spread with Nutella. Now when I say 1/2 a cup, this is just an approximate. Spread as much or as little as you like. The more chocolate the better, I say! This is my daughters favourite part, where she ‘accidentally’ gets it all over her fingers so she can lick it all up.
With the long end of the dough in front of you, roll it up and slice into 12 pieces. Place the pieces side by side on the tray. This helps then rise (just like you would with scones). Brush with a little milk and bake for 20-25 minutes, ovens may vary so keep an eye on them. They are ready when a skewer comes out clean.
Allow to cool slighty and ENJOY!!
Keep in an air tight container at room temperature.
Here is a photo of our finished product. Keep in mind that Miss 7 rolled these and actually did majority of the work herself and I am no photographer!
Not a chocolate person or have a nut allergy? You can omit the Nutella for pretty much anything! Why not try pizza ones with tomato paste, pineapple, ham and cheese? Or vegemite and cheese? Give them a go. I promise you wont be disappointed!
