Saint Teresa of Avila: Funny, Smart, Holy

I love St. Teresa of Ávila  because she is strong, witty and funny. Although she is a doctor of the Church and one of the three great 16th century Spanish mystics, she is down to earth and out spoken.A few words of wisdom from this smart, witty, holy woman:For prayer is nothing else than being on terms of friendship with God....more

Change Me

Change me. In my own arrogance, and with the idealism of youth, I tried to mold myself into a new, better self all on my own. I immersed myself in the culture and literature of the Church, embracing simplicity and a disciplined prayer life taking myself on  through spiritual direction and inner healing.I spurned materialism and the culture of modern societyas I mothered nine children on a small farmTill exhaustion...more

A Loveable, Annoying Pet

Shadow was the most quirky, amusing and utterly annoying pet we have ever owned. A drooling, big black lab mix with overgrown feet and an overgrown personality, Shadow was an integral part of my children’s lives for 13 years. This dog grew up with cats. They could cuddle up beside him or lay on top of him and he barely raised an eyebrow. He tossed mice and fish around like a cat and sometimes he played more like a cat than a dog....more

However, even though I had nine kids and I consider myself to be a baby whisperer, I just learned from my daughters  there are four different cries a new-born makes. A cry starting with...more

This Too Shall Pass

I often use the phrase, “This, too, shall pass”, usually with a grin on my face because it puts my problems in perspective and helps me not become too dramatic about my suffering. I thought it was a biblical phrase.Although the exact words "this too shall pass" is not in the Bible, the verse in 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 talks about things being temporary....more

Hanging By My Fingernails

Before I had the courage to let go of my whole way of living, two inner images rose up in my mind as symbols of my controlling behaviour. They helped me realize the harm I was inflicting on my family....more

Having Fun Crocheting Hooded Cowls

I love crocheting because it is so easy to adapt and change patterns. Etsy wanted over 6 dollars for  patterns for animal hooded cowls. Instead,  I unearthed the free pattern below to give me some idea of how to make a hooded cowl, then adapted the pattern. My results were a wonderful surprise. The free pattern can be found athttp://idesignadventures.blogspot.ca/2012/11/hooded-cowl.html...more
