A Message to My Children on Their First Day of School

Dear Olivia and Evan,As I opened my eyes this morning, the realization that you will be starting a new school year at a new school today held me hostage for a moment. Today, you embark on yet another new chapter in your young lives, and as we rode the elevator down from the 17th floor I thought of so many things I wanted to say to you. Things I've already covered in the many conversations we've had leading up to this day, but as a mom can't help but feel the urge to repeat in case you didn't hear me the first time....more

Why Did The Blogger Cross The Road?

The streets of San Jose are expansive lanes of cars zipping this way and that, each rushing to their individual destination. Standing on the corner, a bit intimidated by this new city, I watched from the safety of the sidewalk as drivers travelled their path. I wondered what their journey entailed on a Friday morning in the middle of summer. Where were they coming from? Where were they going?...more

Her Every Day Hero

Sitting behind the small wooden desk, she watched the clock…2:20pm. Only ten more minutes and she would hear the sound that brought her closer to spending a few minutes with the man who filled her world with laughter and imagination on a daily basis. She brushed a curl off her face as she stole another glance at the old clock on the wall above the chalkboard whose black surface was covered with the dusty remnants of that day's lessons. She wondered, how many questions that board had answered through the years? How many equations had been solved?...more

RIP C.R. - Gone But Not Forgotten

Dear C.R.,It has been one week since you departed my side for the after life. I have opened my eyes each morning refusing to believe it is true. They say time will heal and each day will become a bit easier to bear without you by my side, but how can that be true when all my most memorable moments are ones we captured together, memories we created for many years to come. I'm not sure I can go on without you. I know you were tired and it was time for you to go, but selfishly I wish you had been able to hang on just a little longer....more

Goodbye Nightmare Lover!

The nightmare took over. It came to me night after night, tiptoeing into my peaceful sleep and curling up beside me like a longtime lover. Quietly climbing into my bed, slowly inching over my body, not near enough to touch, but close enough to hover over my warm skin, its breath upon me. Beginning with a gentle caress, it traveled over me, inch by inch, plying my body to its will, allowing no resistance until the moment arrived when it entered me in my weakened state of slumber. At first, came only a moan, barely audible, but enough for my brain to register it was happening....more

Boys To Men: A Glimpse Of The Future

I watch them from the sidelines as they stand side by side on the edge of the field. Every so often they turn and high five each other, throw an arm over a teammate/friend’s shoulder. With the short attention span of little boys, a couple of them roughhouse with those standing closest to them until the coach reminds them to focus on the game. In these instances, I catch glimpses of their faces and can’t help but wonder if I’m catching a glimpse of their future as well....more

My Summer Valentine

All around the United States, temps are dropping and snow is falling. In these moments, I feel quite lucky to live on a tropical island with an endless summer. I have an undying love for summer, and being in such close vicinity to the ocean I often replay a beautiful love story and my personal favorite. It is the kind of story you curl up on the couch with, the kind that urges you to grab the Kleenex along with the popcorn. It is without a doubt the kind of love story you can't wait to share with others....more

San Juan Street Art: Through My Lens

I recently headed out the door to capture the amazing talent displayed around every corner here in San Juan, Puerto RIco. Street Artists have adorned building after building with their scenes and images. I hope you enjoy the first in my series of Street Art: Through My Lens. I challenge to head out and see the world through your lens. Then, share it with the rest of us! ...more

Granting My Kids' Wishes, One Dandelion at a Time

From those whispered in tiny voices before drifting off to sleep, to those shouted for the world to hear, I tirelessly work at granting my children's wishes in a world full of "not nows" and "maybe laters." Some may say I'm spoiling my children by granting their wishes, but I'm not refering to the whiny meltdowns in the toy aisle we've all been privy to nor the wants of today stemming from a checklist of grade school comparables all too soon forgotten. ...more
