Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand Wants Us to Have a Real Conversation on Campus Sexual Assault

In front of a packed audience at the Washington Post, Dana Bolger tells her story as a victim of sexual assault while a student at Amherst College. Though the act of violence remains shocking to the audience comprised largely of twenty-something females. The two seated next to me are Capitol Hill interns with notebooks in hand as Dana describes the aftermath of her assault. It’s this which causes a ripple of gasps throughout the audience....more

Hillary 2.0: I've Evolved as a Voter, Has She Evolved as a Candidate?

In preparation for the inevitable Hillary Clinton announcement, I began to peruse my archives—both written and mental— to remind myself of the hardcore Clintonite I once was. I was the girl who cried during the 2008 Democratic Convention when Hillary finally decided to concede the nomination to then Senator Obama....more
Well said. I, too, have evolved as a voter. Like you, I backed Hillary instead of our ...more

In Work/Life Balance, Where Is the Balance Between Parents and Non-Parents?

This past February, my furnace went kaput. One day, it was a nice 68 degrees—downright tropical during the winter's Polar Vortex. The next day, I could have sworn I saw my breath. After a few moments of panic and mentally preparing myself to freeze to death in my sleep—alone, childless, forever single—I was able to do the adult thing and schedule a repair. Someone would be headed to my home the following afternoon. I paused briefly upon realizing that I'd need to be home in the middle of the workday … but this was an emergency. ...more

DNC 2012: Let's Talk Education, Already!

I’ve spent the last six months frustrated with this election on many levels -- but my chief issues-based concern has been the lack of discussion on education, specifically K-12 education. How could we forget the Great Student Loan Fight of 2012, which included the President "slow jamming" the news? Though I wonder if I’m wrong to think that, because education is the backbone of a strong society, therefore it should go hand in hand with job creation. Even convention keynote speaker Julian Castro said, “We know that you can’t be pro-business unless you’re pro-education." ...more

Build Your Perfect President

The 2012 election will be the first election where I have been a fully formed adult - relatively speaking - during the incumbents' presidency thus giving me the ability to really think of what we have now versus what we could be in the future. In 2004 during Bush v. Kerry, it was Kerry who employed me and kept me clothed in Banana Republic for six months so when it came time to cast my (absentee) ballot I chose Kerry even though I felt no real connection to him or his policies. Do I regret that now? No. ...more

Why I'm moving on and away from Komen

I've struggled on where to start but the beginning is always best. That would be three years ago when my aunt - my mother's sister - died after a years long fight against breast cancer. Whether or not it was metastatic are details of which I remain unaware but I do know that she was only 41 and that 41 is an incredibly young age for someone to die. I don’t know whether or not she was accepting of what might happen or how my mother really dealt with her death given that my grandmother - my mother’s mother - died exactly five weeks prior. ...more
