The GoPro 3+ Is Calling My Name but I'm Resisting

There it is again. Taunting me to come a little closer. It is all I can do to keep pushing my shopping cart down the aisle. I want the GoPro 3+ camcorder. I really want it. This is one of the few times when I have to really think about buying a camcorder. The suppression of camera lust for me isn’t easy but the truth can almost set you free. Here are some things to keep in mind before you rush out to snag one. ...more

There is WHAT?!? in Our Bread?

The lunch line at my local Subway store is long. The ads in the window tout the flatbread sandwich specials. I’m pleased that the restaurant has made a move to remove azodicarbonamide from the bread they use for their sandwiches. This chemical additive is banned in United Kingdom, Europe and Australia, though it is commonly found in American products.  It has been linked to causing asthma and other respiratory problems. ...more

The 1965 Voting Rights Act: Now In Name Only

I sat in my cubicle Tuesday morning as the history that I took for granted was made unconstitutional, when the Supreme Court struck down part of the Voting Rights Act. At first I thought it was some kind of misunderstanding. It is not easy to be stripped of a fundamental American right. ...more

My Memories of Eating Below the Poverty Line

Last week, various folks participated in a campaign called Live Below the Line to bring awareness to living on $1.50 a day. The goal is to experience what it is like to ration your money to buy food. Not good food, not healthy food. Just food. I feel somewhat detached. Now anything that will help a child get near nutrition needs is okay with me. It is just that...well, I remember being a kid in that situation. ...more

Re-thinking the "Social Media Expert" Career

I paid cash money to attend a local social media event recently. It was about 12:20 on Friday afternoon. All I had to show for my investment was a bag of peanuts and a non-functional rubber brain. It was raining. I was miserable. I could hear a man at another table telling a group of women “Oh yeah, I work with mommy bloggers all the time. We have this money making affiliate system that allows you to take care of your families…” I smell hokum. This was not a good sign. ...more

Health Treatments or Quackery?

In-between the space of logic, fear and belief is magical thinking. I will do just about anything to avoid a mammogram. I read the news story about Dr. Joseph Mercola's claims that thermography can be a replacement for mammograms -- that got my attention. ...more
