Call Me Wildly Optimistic, But I Think Education is Going to Survive the Fiscal Cliff

Now that the 2012 election has ended, the news beast has decided we'll get all crazed over the upcoming "fiscal cliff." There must be NEWSMAGEDDON!!!!!! at all times, so the debt ceiling gridlock that never got dealt with in 2011 is now here in the shape of across-the-board federal budget cuts to defense and domestic spending. ...more

Is Race-Based Bullying the "Elephant in the Room?"

Despite all the recent online campaigns and the media’s effort to increase awareness of the effects of bullying, there has been little interest in discussing the cause. There have been several public initiatives to combat racism, but no one has looked at the effects of race-based bullying has on its victims. We do not hear about the suicides, the depression, the inability to trust people and the ability to forgive. Instead what happens is a whole lot of denial. ...more

Say No To Singles

My vision of a plastic-free, zero-waste world is not a singles club. No, I'm not discriminating against uncoupled people. But I am a bigot when it comes to the three categories of single-use products, all of which have been featured on the new Facebook Plastic Crap Wall of Shame lately, another kind of club where fans can upload links and photos of the worst, unnecessary plastic they can find. The Wall is a place to vent and also a way to create awareness of the problem of plastic waste. ...more
