Understanding Bieber's Drug Use from a Mom's Point of View

Understanding Bieber's Drug Use from a Mom's Point of View

It came out today that Justin Bieber tested positive for marijuana and Xanax.

I am not surprised.

Justin started out as a kid who just wanted to sing. Then something happened that changed his life. He got the chance.

Since he was 12 years old, people have made fun of his music, his face, his hair -- and not in nice ways either.

Even with his recent arrest the Internet thought it important to compare his mug shot to Miley Cyrus.

As a parent, my heart breaks for him. Yes, he has more money than Scrooge McDuck. Yes, he has fancy cars and mansions. But he also has a world full of people with very hateful things to say about him every time he turns around.

I'm not surprised that at 19, Bieber is acting a bit unstable. I'm not surprised he is taking medication for anxiety, prescribed or not. I'm not surprised he is smoking pot.

I'm pretty sure that I would be in much worse shape if I had to endure the ridicule and criticism he has dealt with.

It is possible to not enjoy him, or his music. Quietly. And without malice.

I teach my children that if you can't say something nice, you don't say anything. It's too bad more kids don't learn this lesson. Or more adults for that matter.

He danced, crooned, swaggered, played electric piano, and took over Barclays Center with his talent, charisma, and prowess.   Read more >

She's 18 Next Month: This Mom Is Backing Away From Miley Cyrus Criticism

Miley Cyrus will be 18 next month. All this talk of containing the sexy is rubbing me wrong. I can't stand her music, and I've never been a fan of any of the Cyrus clan for myriad reasons. I was aghast at her behavior when she was 16. However, she's not 16 anymore, not a child. Now that she's a month from being old enough to vote and serve her country, any attempts to contain her sexy smacks of patronizing patriarchy to me. But this post is not a rant -- it's a question.   Read more >

Sinead O'Connor and a Bunch of Other Celebs Have Open Letters for You

Here's the thing. It's hard to talk about this Celebrity Open Letter Problem currently in the news without invoking She Who Is a Wrecking Ball But Must Not Be Named. A certain young performer who has taken to foam fingers and naked pica snacking while hanging out on construction sites is seeking news coverage every day, it seems, and I don't want to add to that.   Read more >
