Make the Yuletide Gay
Dear Mouthy Housewives,
I'm getting a divorce and I'm dreading this holiday season. I won't even have my kids on Christmas Day, because they will be with their father since I'm taking them on Christmas Eve. Is there anything I can do to put a little merriment into my holiday? Obviously, I've stocked up on wine and ice cream. Help! I just need to get through this.

Ending a marriage is painful no matter how you slice it. Throwing the holiday season into the mix only makes it harder, as you are forced to face the new reality of your life, and the end of whatever traditions you had created as a family. You will have your kids on Christmas Eve, and you must do all you can to savor that time, and make new traditions with them. As for Christmas Day, I think your best bet is to get out of the house and be around other people. As I see it, you have a few options:
1. Spend the day giving your time to those in need. Find a nursing home, a hospital, a homeless shelter, a church with a soup kitchen, and volunteer your heart out. While you are going through a tough loss right now, you will feel grateful for what you still have after helping others celebrate Christmas.
2. Go on-line and look for single parent groups in your area, and see if there are any activities you can join in on. You don't say whether you are a city or a country girl, but I'd imagine there are single parents everywhere who are in the same boat as you are.
3. Now, you said you want some merriment in your holiday, but I'm not sure if you are wedded to that being Christmas merriment. I'm a little biased here, being a member of the tribe myself, but my final suggestion is that you take your mind off of Christmas entirely and go hang with some Jews! Chinese food and the movies, baby. Go see Les Miserables, and be glad you're not Fantine.
Whatever you decide to do on Christmas Day, know that you are not alone. At the end of the day, if you need to crack open that bottle of wine and become one with both Ben and Jerry, I certainly won't judge you for it.
May your heart be bright,
