Make Your Own Fab Footwear in a Flash - 5 Easy DIY Projects

Take a stroll through the closets of your own home and start envisioning those beat up old shoes with a paint job, sparkly coat of glitter or some new neon laces.

This whole post was inspired by a pair of fancy flats over on I’m Not the Nanny.  Blogger Thien-Kim took a pair of $5 Payless specials, a couple different colors of paint and made some shoe magic.

A while back I featured these adorable owl themed Toms by The Art of Homemaking. With fall right around the corner owls will be coming back in vogue (do they ever really go out?).  Not into owls?  Think of all the other animals you could adorn your toes with.

I’m a little out of the loop with the hipsters and my kids are too young to know what is the talk of the playground.  However, I know enough to know Sperrys are back and bigger than ever.  I love me some brown and neon pink together so I couldn't be happier when I found this post on Love Stitched.  Thinking I might give this DIY from a whirl.

I’m still feeling the Aztec print look.  Some might say the trend is as over as a chevron, but I disagree (on both counts actually).  Tribal prints always appeal to me.  I love these hand painted tennis shoes from Jamie at C.R.A.F.T.

Thought I would share one of my own shoe revamps.  I’m a bit of a vintage fabric scrap hoarder and sometimes, like in the case of these shoes, it pays off.  Check out my blog Naughty Secretary Club for the full details.  You might also like this post on high-tops for toddlers, whale slip-ons & Victorian silhouette shoes.

The winter formal will be here before you know it, and homecoming before that.  Might I suggest some glittered shoes for a touch of glam.  Katy from Sweet Verbena made this pair to work as an elementary school teacher and I heart them.  She added the glitter and bows.  Hello cuteness!

Anyone else have the sudden urge to go raid their shoe closet?

Putting it All Together: Learn from My Shoe Mistake

I'm a flats girl; I only rarely wear heels. I like the idea of heels, especially really high heels, the kind that make your legs look eleven miles long, but in my everyday life, there's too much running around and hauling of laundry and tossing of baseballs to make a nice pair of stilettos a viable option. Most days, I opt for ballet flats, because they're easy to wear and they go with my skinny-jeans-and-a-tee uniform and I can haul $200 worth of groceries in from my car without missing a beat.   Read more >

Tutorial Tuesday: $2 Spunky Step Stool

After finishing up our closet makeover a few weeks ago, we realized we needed a small step stool to reach our highest row of storage boxes. We wanted something that wouldn't take up much room, would be functional, and, of course, inexpensive, so we wandered to our local flea market to see what we could find. After making too many laps to count, and throwing out a few options, we spotted this little treasure buried in a corner under a table.   Read more >

Academy Awards Red Carpet: Thoughts on Three Trends (and How They Can Work for You)

Last night was one of my favorite nights of the year: the Oscars. Not because I'm a big fan of the Academy Awards; I don't really care who wins in what category. I'm interested in the fashion rather than the films, and while I watched most of the actual awards show, it was really just to see more of what the celebrities were wearing. But it's the arrivals part of the evening that I love (and you do too, admit it). Last night's red carpet was a mix of exciting choices and old snoozers.   Read more >
