How to Instagram Your Way Through #BlogHer16

The benefits of attending a BlogHer conference are many, but one of the very best is this: People "get" your social media obsession. Phones are in hand (or in faces) more often than not, and it's not unusual to nod understandingly when someone says, "Keep talking; I just need to post this picture before I forget my caption."

Bloggers and other types of social media fanatics are all about the visual. I mean, if I didn't take a picture, did it really happen? That's one reason why we often find ourselves checking out what our pals enjoyed for breakfast. Or lunch. Or dinner. Or sometimes all three.

Here are some tips for photographically chronicling your #BlogHer16 experience for the folks at home.

Take Lots of Group Selfies/Ussies

Whatever you call them, do it. Seeing old friends and making new friends on-site is worth recording for posterity, and for future throwbacks, as in "That time we all sat in the hallway together, charging our phones! #TBT"

Don't Forget the Hashtag(s)

Always use #BlogHer16 in your captions. Not only will the folks at home be able to follow the hashtag stream and see your pictures, but it will show up in the #BlogHer16 app. If you're snapping pictures at an event or sponsor booth that has its own hashtag, add that one as well.

Video Is Great, Too!

You can post a video of up to 60 seconds long on Instagram, and that's a fantastic way to give more dimension and sound to your stream. Take video ahead of time and post it, or do it from within the app. (Bonus tip: Check out Instagram's Boomerang app, which stitches together a burst of photos to make a gif-like video that plays forward and backward.)

Be Artsy

Why not be creative? Take pictures that truly tell the story of your #BlogHer16 experience: your pen and notebook if you're taking notes old-school style, your lanyard and name tag, what you're eating during the afternoon break (there I go with food again), speakers leading discussions you're really into, fellow attendees listening with rapt attention, a pretty centerpiece.

Focus on taking unique pictures from unexpected perspectives. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

Share Your Favorite Sponsors

We couldn't put on this conference without our sponsors (Thank you, sponsors!), and what I love about the expo hall in particular is the creative ways that our business partners decorate their booths to get their messages across. The expo hall is chock-full of photo opps! (Don't forget their hashtags.)

Cross-post Sparingly

This is my personal preference and you may not agree: I'd suggest pushing only a small selection of photos from Instagram to your Facebook wall or Twitter stream so as not to overload your friends and followers there. Publish a status or tweet that reads, "If you want to see more of what I'm doing in LA at #BlogHer16 this weekend, check out my Instagram stream @MelisaLW!" Those who are interested will gladly follow.

Take the Challenge!

As we did last year, we've got Instagram Challenges going on each week leading up to #BlogHer16 as well as one during the conference. We love seeing your pictures so make sure to use the appropriate hashtags in your original caption so we can find you. We'll repost some of our favorites! The upcoming challenges are:

#KnowMe AND #BlogHer16 (Monday 7/11-Friday 7/15): Introduce yourself via Instagram
#MySite AND #BlogHer16 (Monday 7/18-Friday 7/22): Show us your website!
#WhatIWillMiss AND #BlogHer16 (Monday 7/25-Friday 7/29): Show us who or what you'll miss while enjoying yourself in Los Angeles
#MyBlogHer16 AND #BlogHer16 (Thursday 8/4-Saturday 8/6): Show us what YOUR #BlogHer16 looks like (anything goes)!

Most importantly, have a great time with it. I'm looking forward to seeing and sharing your photos!
