How 125 Bloggers Surprised Katherine Stone at BlogHer '14

A few months ago, I was quietly added to a secret group online with a singular mission: come up with a way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Katherine Stone’s life saving website, Postpartum Progress. Created by A'Driane Nieves, a mental health blogger (and 2014 VOTY reader), the group quickly grew to over 125 people. As more people were stealthily added and folded into the group, the ideas began to pop up with exclamation points.

When A'Driane and I realized Katherine’s anniversary would fall near BlogHer, and that she and many of us would be in attendance, we knew we had to see if we could do something at the conference. We drafted and sent a letter to BlogHer co-founder Elisa Camahort Page and crossed our fingers. With just a few months before the conference, we knew it was a long shot that there would be space or time for us to do anything for Katherine. Before the end of the day we heard back: BlogHer would MAKE TIME.

I started collecting video clips from members of the Postpartum Progress Warrior Mom community. Every video clip was a story of a life changed because of Katherine Stone. Piecing the quilt of stories together was an honor. Seeing the connective thread of support go from one end of the screen to the next and from one woman to the next, it truly was a visual glimpse of the power of the internet.

Katherine presented her 10x10 at the BlogHer '14 conference this past weekend. She shared her personal journey and the journey of her nonprofit, Postpartum Progress. The energy in the audience was electric because Katherine is electric. When she finished her inspiring talk she tried to quickly exit stage left, but her plans were thwarted when Elisa walked onto the stage and suggested she have a seat.

The lights dimmed on stage and suddenly over forty women were on stage thanking and congratulating Katherine via video. It’s a chance not many of us ever get: to thank a woman who helped shape our internet.

Plus, it was pretty great to surprise her! I am certain we did that!
