Garden Blogs to Follow This Spring

It might be cold where you are, or spring might have sprung early (like it has at BlogHer's office in California), but mid-March is time to start thinking about getting your garden on. Whether you've got tons of backyard space or are more of a houseplant person; whether you're interested in veggies or decorative plants or a little of everything—we've found great garden blogs just for you.

ILONA'S GARDEN JOURNAL

Ilona's blog has a ton of great tools and technical tips and photos of her own garden, along with some fun opinions like Do We Really Need to Dumb Down Gardening? and Plant Fads and what they mean.

YOU GROW GIRL

You'll love Gayla Trail's blog for its fun voice (how can you not love a David Bowie-themed tutorial on growing an earth star terrarium?) that makes gardening feel do-able— but you'll keep coming back for its crazy-detailed resource guides like The Lazy Gardener's Seed Starting Chart and tomato growing guide.

GARDEN THERAPY

Garden Therapy

Stephanie at Garden Therapy posts garden projects, food projects, weekend projects and recipes. The extensive tutorials—plus her deeply held belief that getting outside and connecting with the dirt is good for the soul—make this a fantastic blog for a beginning gardener.

COLD CLIMATE GARDENING

Kathy Purdy lives in upstate New York, and she started her blog to share all her knowledge about hardy plants, greenhouses, houseplants and bugs. If it's still snowing where you are, read her post How I Defeat Cabin Fever right now.

PLANTS ARE THE STRANGEST PEOPLE

This blog by a houseplant geek who used to work at a garden center is chock-full of great info—like a weeklong dive into the murky subject of plant toxicity to kids and pets and a running list of houseplants he's tried to grow (with notes on successes, failures, and favorites), as well as some cool experiments in microphotography. Plus, his blog title is a Buffy reference, and he's old school: No social media besides his blog.

AIKEN HOUSE AND GARDENS

Carolyn Aiken lives in a quaint cottage on Prince Edward Island, and her blog is photo after photo of roses in full bloom, statuary, tea in the garden and toile in the rooms. It simply could not be more inspiring for the romantics among us.

THE INADVERTENT GARDENER

BlogHer Contributing Editor Genie Gratto blogs her urban gardening experiments as well as gorgeously written posts about both food and gardening. Don’t miss her excellent Green Thumb Sunday photo series.
