Exercise October 2
Exercise. For many people, it’s a dirty word. And please don’t hate me, but I don’t find exercise to be drudgery. I enjoy exercising. I like the feeling of accomplishment I get when I’ve finished my daily exercise. I need the energy it gives me. I appreciate how well I sleep on the days I exercise. I relish how I feel about my personal appearance because I exercise. And what I adore most about exercise may surprise you…the mood enhancement. Not the runners high we all hear about from a rush of endorphins, although if you can run that long, my congratulations! This mood enhancement is different–I leave my phone, and everything else, behind for one hour and give my mind a rest and my body a workout. My mood is always great on the days I exercise–my mind is at peace, my stress level is lowered, and I feel relaxed.
Not currently exercising? Don’t want to join the gym? No problem. If you like exercise videos, you can rent, buy, trade, or borrow them for free at your local library. Enjoy the great outdoors? Go for a walk, take a bike ride, skate, swim, surf, hike, scuba dive, whatever you like. Don’t want to go it alone? Ask a friend to be your exercise buddy, join a class, get a personal trainer that has a group. The point is this: make your exercise something you ENJOY! If you like what you’re doing, it won’t seem like a chore, you’ll stick with it, and you can reap all the benefits while having fun.
I like variety, so in a week’s time I’ll walk, take a class, do yard work, ride a bike, lift weights, practice yoga, and any other activity that becomes available–sometimes I get lucky and I find a dance class or something else out of the ordinary. In other words, I keep it exciting and so should you.
Make a list of 15 activities you enjoy–don’t worry about how well you can perform them, just list what you like to do. Over the next four weeks, pick a different activity each day as your form of exercise. Exercise five times each week for at least 50 minutes. Track your progress and let me know what you discovered.
