"Duets" New Show on ABC: A Review
Having just come off of American Idol, I was rather uninspired toward committing to another singing competition TV series. So, I wasn't planning at all to begin watching "Duets" the new singing show on ABC where professional singers perform duets with amateur contestants in an Idol style competition. Honestly, the whole duet thing is not really even that intriguing to me. But, of course, I happened to step into the room as the show was on the television last night and, like any other addict, I thought, "I can just take a quick look, it won't hurt to just check it out. I can handle it".
One hour in, I began to formulate my opinion of the show, and I just thought I'd share it here for whatever it's worth. (yeah, my opinion and 4 bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks).
I'm not a huge Kelly Clarkson fan one way or the other, but I have to say that she's the best thing about the show. She's looking pretty good, quite svelte these days in her clingy blue dress she had on last night. Although, I have to say I thought the black Mary Jane-esque shoes she wore not only made her look like a little girl, but they didn't go with the dress and they chopped off her legs (Kelly can use all the 'length' she can get, let's don't be chopping anything off). Her hair was really cute, the new, hip bangs look that really lengthened Kelly's face. Her hair color was great, looking all sleek and shiny. Too bad about the shoes. Anyway, I loved Kelly's southern 'twang' (just a hint is still there even after all the years in L.A.) and her fun, laid back style is refreshing. Kelly was just her 'perky' self and Lord knows this show could use some perk (read on).
I really don't have much to say about the other celebrity singers - Jennifer Nettles, John Legend, and Robin Thicke. Jennifer seemed nice enough and she can sing well -- all the celebs can, obviously. Robin Thicke has some nice man-arms, but when he sang a song with Kelly Clarkson he had about as much sexual chemistry as, well, my 9th grade Chemistry teacher (who was also the Chess Club sponsor, if you get me). John Legend just seemed to me like he really wasn't sure why he was there. Also, who was the dude that was the host of the show? Some guy with no last name... or no first name.... not sure which.
As you can likely tell at this point, I am not enamored with Duets, and I won't likely watch any more episodes. And here's the real reason why not: I just found it really weird and uncomfortable to watch regular people (the contestants) get out-sung by their pro partners. Yikes. I felt kind of sorry for them and I just wanted the song to be over for their sake. A couple of the contestants were decent singers but, anybody's going to sound like crap trying to keep up with Kelly Clarkson. It's just embarrassing. Who did this people piss off at ABC to end up on this show?
What kind of duet show are we going to have next? Over-40 people (not unlike myself) swimsuit modeling alongside Miranda Kerr and David Beckham?
"Duets" was just OK for me, Dog.
