DIY Sweetened Condensed Milk (in the slow cooker!)

DIY Sweetened Condensed Milk (in a slow cooker!) by PioneerMomma.comI was at the grocery store the other day, and picked up a can of sweetened condensed milk for a project coming up.  Then I put it back.  Have you read the label??  It simply says: milk and sugar.  Well, I can do that at home!  I have seen recipes in the past for making your own sweetened condensed milk at home, and I cannot for the life of me remember where I saw the one I had wanted to try first.  Shame on me for not bookmarking, I suppose.

I figured it would be simple enough, so I tried it on my own.  Holy moly, it is rediculously simple!  I believe another reason why it takes hardly any effort at all is because I made it in my slow cooker.  If I can get something in there that I can essentially fix and forget, in it goes!  Now this does require some maintenance stirring.  I did mine a grand total of about six times.

The end result tasted just like the canned version, albeit almost better!  I won't be buying it from the grocery store anymore, especially because this recipe only calls for two ingredients.  I hope to try making it with raw milk once we move, so if you try it that way, please let me know how it turns out!  This time, I simply used a regular gallon of milk you can get at that grocery store you put that can of condensed milk back (you did put yours back too, didn't you? :-))

Here's what I did:

3 cups whole milk

1 cup sugar

(you can change up your measurements, but keep in mind that I find the best results from a 3:1 ratio of milk to sugar)

1.  Pour the milk and sugar into a slow cooker and stir.

2.  Heat on high, partially covered, stirring occasionally, for about 4 1/2 hours, or until desired consistency.  I did mine about every hour for the first three hours, and whenever it looked like it needed it after that.

3.  Let cool and pour into airtight jar or container.  If you used three cups of milk, it should equal out to about 8 ounces of sweetened condensed milk when you are done.  Store in refrigerator.  Enjoy!
