Criminal Crafts

Criminal Crafts

Nobody said crafts had to be sweet and nice. Ding dong the days of doilies and quilts are dead, viva la’ Criminal Crafts. Ok, that was a joke. There is room enough for the sweet and sour in our ever broadening craft world. I just happen to be a founding member of a girl gang called The Austin Craft Mafia and the owner of a company called Naughty Secretary Club so it would only make sense that I would be smitten with a book called Criminal Crafts: Outlaw Projects for Scoundrels, Cheats and Armchair Detectives. Let your dark crafty side show by making yourself a Glue Gun Bandolier or perhaps a John Dillinger Soap Gun.

Criminal Crafts by Miss Demeanor A.K.A. Shawn Gascoyne-Bowman is a fun tongue in cheek guide to crafts with an edge and a criminal record. I hate long tedious craft projects that feel like you have been given a life sentence. There are 30 projects, most of which seem relatively easy to accomplish and not too time consuming.

Favorite projects include the Hell in a Handbag purse, extremely handy for smuggling flasks into movies or compact cameras into concerts. The Crime Scene Carpet is a throw rug with a chalk outline of a body that is begging to adorn my next Halloween party. Not only are there craft projects but there are also a handful of cocktail recipes for drinks like an Atomic Cherry Bomb. Yum!

DIY has never been as devious as it is with Crafts for the Criminal Mind. Noir themed projects for every skill level from misdemeanors to felonies. Being bad and crafty never felt so good.

Throwing a Craft Party with Vintage Flair

I wish I was friends with Jessie Senese of Shop Sweet Lulu so she would throw me parties. Jessie does not throw plain old shin-digs with supplies from the local Party Pig, oh no this woman picks a theme and runs with it.  Recently, when a friend of her's had a book published she opted for a vintage inspired craft party to celebrate.  Who knew sewing baskets, bowls of colorful buttons and fabric scraps could look so cute and festive? I have never thought of my craft supplies as party decor, but now that I have I am already planning a soiree.   Read more >
