Clarissa's Berry Winter Smoothie Puree
This year was the beginning of my personal commitment to eat and live healthier. My favorite foods are fresh fruit, especially berries. However, being single I found I was wasting many of my organically grown berries. They would go bad quickly. Plus, living in an apartment with an apartment-size refrigerator didn’t make it easy to freeze my fresh fruit. So, I came up with a great idea: puree my berries and store in mason jars until I was ready to use them.
Fear not. I don’t can my berries as that is a very long process. I only buy enough berries to make a week’s worth of smoothies. Now, that winter is approaching, I realized I want fresh berry smoothies until spring. Pureeing berries and using ice trays will help me achieve that goal.
I keep a jar of pureed berries in the refrigerator for easy access. Since my freezer is small, I fill one ice tray with my smoothie mixture. Once they freeze solid, I remove them, place them into a plastic freezer bag, and start the process over again. Now, I can have a fresh smoothie anytime; and they are so delicious!
Simple Tools and Ingredients
- 1 - 32 ounce mason jar with lid
- A variety of fresh berries (I used blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries.)
- A hand-held mixer
Combine all the berries in the 32-ounce mason jar and mix until pureed. Pour into mason jar and hand tighten the lid. That’s it. It’s that simple.
This lasts me approximately one week. Sometimes I add almond or coconut milk, bananas, kale, and whey protein for a complete meal, especially after my workouts. However you mix it, you’re having a very healthy, liquid meal. Plus, you’re saving money by not wasting fresh berries. Enjoy!
