BlogHer.com Has New Navigation Bars and Buttons

Submitted by Denise on August 3, 2010 - 6:31pm

One of the things that I love best about working at BlogHer.com is that everyone on the team is completely open to listening to community feedback and suggestions -- and then acting on them. The new navigation bar and buttons are a great example of that. You told us you were having trouble navigating the site. We listened.

We've launched a brand-new navigation banner with new buttons that we think are going to help you find your way to the content you're most interested in.

The topics menu looks very much like our old navigation, with a few really nice twists. We've pulled Green and Feminism back to the main, top-level navigation, rather than leaving them in the sub-topic navigation. We've renamed a couple of topics as well.

Notice the darker blue section on the left labeled "All Topics." If you click that, the sub-topics menu will expand, and you can quickly drill down into the content you want to read.

Right above that main topics menu, you'll see some new buttons:

  • Groups (previously labeled Community) takes you to the Groups landing page where you can create a new group or find a group to join.
  • Blog Directory (previously labeled HerNetwork) contains listings to 20,000 blogs hosted outside of BlogHer.com. These are blogs written (and submitted) by you. This should be your first stop if you're looking for new blogs to read!
  • Conferences will take you to all of the information you need if you're interested in attending one of our events.
  • Marketplace is a new e-commerce section of BlogHer.com, and will launch later this week. Keep an eye on this area -- we'll be bringing you a lot of new opportunities in the weeks ahead.
  • Exclusive Offers is the button to click if you're looking for sweepstakes and promotions.

Take some time to give this new navigation a whirl and come back and tell us what you think. We're still listening -- always.

I just checked and it looks like everything is back to normal. Rich text editor is back, formatting is holding properly...

Is it working for you?

That appears to be related to the missing rich text editor.

You can fix that by adding < p > and < /p > tags in front of and at the end of paragraphs. (Remove the space between the brackets and the p's, those are there just to show code.)

OK, I believe you....

At work, I am the same way...constantly reporting issues. Unfortunately IT doesn't embrace it as much as you, and have given me quite an unflattering nickname.....

I found one more thing that I think you would like to know. I put up a post last night, complete with paragraphs. The paragraph breaks didn't show. I edited to double space between, and still it appears as one big paragraph.

Please believe me when I say that. I really appreciated you reporting the problems and giving me information that helped us troubleshoot.

We did indeed figure out what the problem is and the rich text editor will be back very very soon, I promise.

And, I'm glad we were able to fix the topics menu problem that was keeping you (and others) from being able to create blog posts.

You helped!

I was able to post a blog... yipee! however, the rich editor is still missing....sorry, I hate to be a pain!

We've removed the requirement to choose a topic - can you see if you can post now, without choosing a topic?

RE: the rich text editor... actually, I didn't know that. Hang on, let me figure that out!

Although I am sure you already know..... I also noticed that the tool bar that has the formatting buttons & inserting buttons is no longer visible....

I'm using windows 7. I have had the issue since Thursday. THANKS!

I've reported the problem that some people are having when they try to create a blog post. I don't think it's related to this nav but that's certainly something to check.

Can you email me or reply here telling me which browser you're using - and also what your operating system is (windows 7, vista, OS 10 etc...)

I LOVE the changes. I think it is so much easier to navigate the site. I don't know if it is related, but for the past few days, I have been trying to upload a post unsuccessfully. I can't click on save after I click life as a topic. I just have a spinning circle. Is there a different way to post now after these changes?

Can you send me a screenshot, I don't see what you describe. Also... can you tell me which browser/version you're using, please?

Newsletter link was up there but to the left instead of the right. I couldn't find it recently, either!

The topics/conferences/groups/etc bar has no flow. It's color/color/stop, color/color/stop.

I like the labeling. A lot. Much easier to understand. Also? Was the newsletter link so easy to find (above that nav) before? If so, I never noticed it, but I agree that's the perfect spot for it now!
