Ask4Recovery - How do I stop defining myself by everything external?
Hello friends! Today’s ‘Ask’…
How do I stop defining myself by everything external?
I lived dependent on everything external for a long period of time. From my job on Wall Street, to money, to my outer appearance, and the list goes on. My sense of self was completely dependent on these material and external factors. That way of living left me feeling like an empty shell of a person, so far removed from the person I was put here to be and the person I am today. I was so caught up in this way of living and I never thought a life based on my own self-worth and sense of being was possible.
I am here to tell you that it is and leads to a life beyond your wildest dreams.
It only takes a moment of true awareness and connection to realize that we were put here with a purpose so gratifying. To be selfless, loving and compassionate. With this comes to ability to be humble and grateful. By living your life dependent on everything external, we become so far removed from our connection with something bigger than us and get caught up in our heads, our egos. For me, that is a destructive and sad place to be. I now see how enjoyable it is to get to know myself. To live a life based on my own values, and core beliefs. Not just living my life to appease others. It is not easy to create this shift, but it is possible.
