5 Tips to Start Yoga at Home

Yoga can be intimidating. I know; I was completely intimidated by it at first.

I started yoga because I saw beautiful poses on Instagram and wanted to try them. When I did try them, they turned out to be harder than they looked. So, I started practicing yoga at home, and today I want to share with you 5 tips that helped me establish my at home yoga practice.

1. Set an Intention

This is an expression often used by yogis. All it means is to commit your practice to something. Some examples could be, "try your hardest and come out stronger," '"not judging yourself and allowing yourself to go with the flow," or simply dedicating it to God, because after all we are to everything for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

2. Be Inspired

I love looking through my Instagram feed to see what others are doing. Instagram has a great, supportive yoga community that I am so grateful for. This is also a great way to figure out poses you love and also "challenge" poses for yourself. Here are some suggestions of Instagramers I love.

3. Prepare Your Essentials

You need very little to practice yoga.

Essentials:

Yoga Mat
Comfy Clothing
Water Bottle

And then there of course some optional items to enhance your practice.

Optional:

Yoga Block
Yoga Belt

4. Add It to Your Schedule

Just as you would write down a party, or a meeting, or an appointment, pencil in your yoga practice. Make time for it. If you don't carve out a specific time in the day to do it, then it won't get done.  It will just keep getting pushed to the side.

5. Quality Over Quantity

It is such a familiar saying, but it rings so true here. If you only have 15 minutes, rather than doing a quick Sun Salutation, try to deepen a pose you have been working on. Push yourself a little bit further into that pose, breathe, wiggle, then push yourself further. You will feel more accomplished and happier than just doing a routine because you made it your own.

Quick Note: Take pictures of your progress. That has been the biggest encouragement for me in my practice. To see how much better I am getting in a pose in a week, month, year. The result are astounding.
