2013 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival: Japan
We're huge fans of Japanese food, so we're always anticipating what we'll order from the Japan Kiosk during the Food & Wine Festival. This is another kiosk where we tend to stick to the new stuff.
Sarah of Running at Disney and I were both interested in the Green Tea Colada, both being fans of green tea and cocktails, but upon inquiring to its ingredients, it sounded less and less appealing: Green Tea (yum!), Coconut Rum (meh...), Pineapple Juice (yum!) and Pina Colada Mix (ew...). It sounded way to sweet for either of us, so we decided to skip it. If you've had it, let us know if our assumption is correct!
With Matt being a fan of Teriyaki sauce, he was ready to order the Teriyaki Chicken Hand Roll. It's described as Marinated White Meat Chicken with Sushi Rice topped with Teriyaki Sauce. Pretty straightforward! Of course, we both ordered our own Sapporo Drafts. :)
Matt enjoyed every bite of this dish. Even I, who does not like Teriyaki sauce, found that it wasn't overpowering with the rest of the elements. The chicken was tender as well. While I wouldn't necessarily order it for myself, I wouldn't be surprised if Matt orders this again before the festival ends.
On preview day, the Youki Tofu wasn't yet available. On a subsequent trip, however, I had my chance to order. The tofu is topped with Miso Sauce and Edamame served with Grilled Vegetables. I received all of three edamame!
The tofu was nearly impossible to cut with a fork alone as it was rather tough. No worries, I just bit right into it. At first it wasn't decent, though a bit chewy, and then I got hit with a really unpleasant aftertaste, and I believe the miso sauce was the culprit. We're talking "I almost spit it out" unpleasant. It dissipated shortly after it hit me, and I gave it one other bite, but after that, no more. And I don't think the vegetables ever saw a grill. They were served out of a steam tray and tasted like they were from the grocery store freezer. I will say I was happy to have them there to get rid of the awful taste from the tofu, though. :)
While I haven't ordered them this year, here's a look at 2012's Spicy Hand Roll:
And here is 2012's California Roll:
What will you be ordering from Japan this year?
